6 tips for a guilt free #NationalBurgerDay
Saturday May 28th is #NationalBurgerDay. I have no idea who came up with it but I love burgers so I plan to celebrate it. I’m going to enjoy all the burger, none of the gurgling stomach and lethargy that follows!
Here’s how I plan to enjoy my burger this weekend:
- Consider a bison, ground turkey or sprouted lentil burger. These leaner proteins still grill nicely. Grilled portabello mushroom is also an excellent burger. Ground chicken breast can dry out and tempt you to load up on sauces.
- Swap mayo with an avocado dressing: whip together 1 avocado, 1 lime, 1 garlic clove and a pinch of chili flakes.
- Load up on veggies. Lettuce, tomato, onion and dill pickles are classics, but I love going out because I can get toppings on my burger that I wouldn’t normally buy for just one meal, like alfalfa sprouts (I’m drooling while I type this, seriously!). Veggies are juicy and will give you the feeling of being full compared to sugar laden ketchup and relish. Mustard is still okay in my books.
- Eat your burger openface. Just set that top piece of bun on your side plate. Don’t eat it. Use a knife and fork and ditch those extra calories from carbs.
- Order sweet potato fries. Of course a side salad is best, but who wants a burger and side salad. It just doesn’t roll off your tongue. Sweet potato is easier for the body to process than potato and they don’t taste good with ketchup (a bonus, believe me). Try instead the left over avocado sauce for dipping.
- Work up an appetite. My friend Jeff compiled a list of 100 home exercises in a video and easy to reference training guide you can download. These exercises can be done at home with next to no equipment at all.
