The Reality of Reality TV
I have a guilty confession. We cancelled cable and I miss the reality shows on A&E and TLC.
Last month I took a week-getaway with one of my sisters, her boys and my Mom. I admit that I watched a few marathons. One was an “A&E Original Docuseries” called Fit to Fat to Fit.
The concept is that trainers gain weight: no exercise and eating excessive calories for four months (one gained 69 pounds). They loose that weight with a new client who is obese, and better understand their client’s struggles.
The experiment results were fascinating during the phase with no exercise and over eating:
- nausea and vomiting when they first introduced junk food
- swollen and aching joints
- getting winded walking up stairs
- clothes not fitting and discomfort from folds/rolls in their skin
- extreme exhaustion and lack of energy; feeling lethargic
- onset of depression
- high blood pressure and cholesterol, requiring medication
These symptoms sounded familiar! I was honestly shocked that these signs of disease and discomfort were self-inflicted from a short hiatus from movement and a change in food.
Equally so, the trainer and client both experienced equally amazing transformations on their return journey to health.
Let me ask you a question: could you commit to changing things up for just 10 days? Let me know if you are interested in a challenge by writing in the comments “I’m in!” or “Tell me more”.
