Tea Ideas
Dr. Oz recommended Cardamom Cinnamon tea to help increase energy, so I started looking for recipes. I’ve been home sick and warm tea has been the only thing that soothes my throat.
These are selections I will be trying, all sourced from the inter-webs.
Sample 1:
- 6 cardamon pods, smashed
- 1 anise star
- broken piece of cinnamon
- 1 thin slice of lemon
- 1 tsp sugar, honey or blue agave
Place in a glass. Pour hot water over it. Let steep for about 3 minutes.
Sample 2:
- 1 tbs ground ginger
- 2 tsp cardamom seeds, green and peeled
- 1 tsp whole cloves
- 1 tsp whole black peppercorns
- 3-inch cinnamon stick, broken up
Combine tea spices and grind as finely as possible. Store in an air-tight container.
Combine 5 tsp rooibos (if using), 1 tsp spice mixture, 4 cups of water and unpasturized honey to taste in a pot and bring to a boil over med-high heat. Once at a boil, turn heat down to low and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes. Add ½ cup whole milk. Turn heat up to medium and bring to a boil. Strain and drink.
Sample 3:
- 4 cardamom pods
- 4 black peppercorns
- 4 cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 slices fresh ginger, quarter slices
- 2 tablespoons honey or sugar
- milk
Place all ingredients in 2 ½ cups of water, heat, but do not boil, for half an hour and strain. Add honey and milk to taste.
Sample 4:
3/4 cup water
2-4 whole green cardamom pods, smashed
1-2 thin slices fresh ginger
1 1-inch cinnamon stick
1 piece star anise
3/4 cup milk
1 1/2 teaspoons loose black tea leaves
Sweetener, to taste (I prefer honey or maple syrup)
In a small saucepan, combine the water, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon stick and star anise. Bring the mixture to a boil then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture is fragrant. Add the milk and tea leaves, and simmer for another minute then turn off the heat and let steep for 2 minutes. Pour into a cup through a fine mesh sieve. Discard the leaves and spices. Add sweetener, to taste.
If you want deeply flavorful tea in the morning, follow these alternate directions starting the night before.
In a small saucepan, combine the water, cardamom, cinnamon stick and star anise. Do not add the ginger yet. Bring to a boil then turn it off and cover the pan. In the morning, add the sliced ginger and bring to a boil then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture is fragrant. Add the milk and tea leaves, and simmer for another minute then turn off the heat and let steep for 2 minutes. Pour into a cup through a fine mesh sieve. Discard the tea and spices. Add sweetener, to taste.
