Feeding the hungry

For those of you who haven’t figured it out, I am a professed foodie. But I think it’s more than that – I am an urban foodie. I love that you can grow food in your backyard and am saddened by neighbours afraid to eat apples from their own property incase they get poisoned … where do they think store-bought apples come from? Wow! It saddens me, but I combat this with plans to rip up the lovely flower garden down the side of my house and replace it with cucumbers, zucchini, yellow beans, herbs and plum tomatoes.

I came across this article in my local paper and thought it to be wonderfully refreshing.

For more than a decade, members of the Kirkwall Presbyterian Church congregation have been committed to help end hunger around the world.

The close-knit congregation has raised $82,000 for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank since it started harvesting its first crop in 1994. This year, red beans and soy beans were harvested – the crops are collected and transported to an elevator to be sold. The proceeds from the sale of the crops go directly to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, which operates out of Winnipeg.

This is the type of activity that excites me. It is meaningful by building local relationships with a positive global impact! I encourage you to read the whole story by the Flamborough Review »
