Making History
On Sunday afternoon I had lunch at Shopsy’s Deli on the corner of Front & Young with two of my colleagues from the CPDC. I ordered a European-style sausage on a bun with sauerkraut and a side salad, washed down with a Wiessbeir. They each had a smoked meat sandwhich. It seemed uneventful aside from the multitude of dogs from the festival on Front Street.
The next day (Monday June 15), there was an eviction sign on the door and a demolition crew tearing it apart. We had no idea that we were part of history – eating at Shopsy’s on the last day it would be a location it’s occupied for over 25 years! Read more about it in the TheStar.com »
According to Wikipedia, in 1921, the husband-and-wife team of Harry and Jenny Shopsowitz opened an 18-seat ice cream parlour at Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West in Toronto. It became Shopsowitz Delicatessen and by the mid-1940s was selling products under the Shopsy’s brand name. A sign on the door stated that they intend to relocate by the end of the month on Centre Island. The Mississauga and Markham stores are still open.
I had great childhood memories of it and had hoped to take Steve this summer … le sigh!
