Rhubarb theft – who does that?!
I apologize for being remiss in my postings this week. I was at a weekend conference in Thunder Bay – got no sleep, developed a wicked migraine and lost my cell phone charger, but I won the Soroptimist of the Year award for my club, complete with a pretty pin and it was worth it just for that!
I am writing today because I am filled with outrage. In a letter to the editor this weekend in the Flamborough Review, Mrs. Lillycrop from Carlisle writes:
When I awoke this morning, I was shocked to see that sometime during the night some bold thief had entered my backyard and stole all of our rhubarb. Yes, that is correct. Our RHUBARB.
You could plainly see where they walked through our freshly tilled garden and placed down a large box and helped themselves. We asked our neighbour if he had maybe seen someone in our backyard anytime, so he decided to check his rhubarb patch. To his disbelief, his was gone also!
Since we live on a country back road that is used frequently by people exercising, the culprit would have had to have walked past our houses on many occasions to see where these patches were. And this was obviously a planned caper and executed in the cover of darkness.
What kind of person would do this? Better question…why? Since it is only me and my wife living here and we have a very large garden, whatever we do not use we give away to family and friends anyway. Maybe, had this person just asked, we would have gladly given them plenty – but now we don’t even have enough to make a pie.
I guess, in this day and age, not even your own garden is safe from the petty thieves.
I can’t even begin to express the bitterness and sadness I would feel if someone robbed my garden of my flowers and vegetables – I put so much care into watering and feeding them. I am truly heartbroken for this couple!
