Crocuses, Daffodils, Tulips, the neighbour’s Magnolia tree and weeds all over our lawn- welcome Spring!!!

Tulips and Daffodils. There are crocuses but I can’t find the pics
1 day’s worth of weed picking. This buck is 2′ across and 1/3 full

I inherited a commercial compost on our property, but with the use of Hamilton’s green bins, it didn’t seem worthwhile to use. Now that the weather warmed up and I’m spending a few hours a week digging up clover, dandelions and other unidentified green flowering things, I decided to start using it. Apparently leaves decay much better on a forrest floor because they were all intact in the bin! So I’ve cleared it out and started from scratch using the 1 bin method.

If you’ve never tried one, it takes most weeds, vegetable and fruit scraps (greens), coffee grinds and tea (for nitrogen), last year’s potting soil (to add mack in some natural nutrients) and adding layers of leaves (brown) at the end of each week. A good general rule of thumb is use 2-3 parts brown to 1 part green to let air circulate. Grass clippings and coffee filters take forever to breakdown and certain weeds will multiply (I don’t know which ones though – Dana if you have any comments, let me know please!) so put all those in your green bin instead. If you have questions like I did, there are some great one resources (this page actually has a picture of my compost bin. How crazy!) »
