Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake
No, this is not a recipe but what people do with food is widely entertaining and I just had to share!
Monday, May 25th was the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake, held near Gloucester, England. People actually run down the hill to chase the cheese – an 8-pound Double Gloucester cheese round to be specific. Just to give you an idea of how silly this is, here’s a picture of Cooper’s Hill. The face of the hill itself is concave so the event often results in broken bones, sprains and concussions. Funny enough, local council normally posts signs requesting that, to avoid soil erosion, people do not walk on the face of the hill. The posts are removed for the annual event.
Did you know? During the Second World War rationing was introduced, preventing the use of a cheese in the event. That didn’t stop them … from 1941 to 1954 a wooden “cheese” was used instead. A small piece of cheese was placed in a hollow space in the center of the wooden replica [taken from Wikipedia].
