Diets vs lifestyle changes

Most of my colleagues swear by the South Beach Diet and somehow a discussion about the merits of cauliflower over potatoes led to the topic of Blood Type Diets. I had never heard of such a thing so my coworker sent me to “Eat Right 4 Your Type”. The theory is that certain food groups should be avoided based on your blood type (A, B, AB, or O) but a good part of our conversation was about the exceptions in her family. According to the Mayo Clinic, some research suggests that people who have certain blood types may develop specific patterns of food allergies but this diet doesn’t have sufficient evidence.

It brings up an interesting question of beliefs around the topic of “You are what you eat.” I found an interesting quote  while searching on the topic of diets (note that I don’t approve of the author’s use of caps):

Some of the medical complaints patients consult a practitioner for can be classified as being self-inflicted. Of those, an increasing number is due to practices that are being followed for the principal purpose of improving one’s Health, without – at least initially – people recognizing the worthlessness, or possible Health Risks involved. Various Diets, most Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) products, and many forms of random self-Supplementation fall into that category. Reference

I still remember, from my days of networking, several women attending the same meeting and each with a bottle of juice: mangosteen, goji berry and acai. It was shocking because each had the same claims, including being better than the competition. Will I try it at a tasting party? Sure! Will I buy it? Only from my Mom – she sells MonaVie and she’s had enormous benefits in the few months she’s been taking it:

I have consumed MonaVie, the acai berry amazing fruit juice from the Amazon Forest in Brazil since November, four months. It is an extremely nutritious beverage containing nineteen juices but the premier juice being the acai berry. High in anti-oxidents, it has the ability to combat free radicals which are contributors to cancer and aging. It also contains a liquid plant derived glucosamine which has personally benefited me. I have suffered from an ITB problem for several years which is a tightening and painful fascia band running down my leg. As well as a torn fascia under my left foot it has been very swollen and painful as well. Since drinking MonaVie, my foot and leg are suddenly back to normal.

At the beginning of this experience with the acai juice I dropped all pain meds like Tylenol or Motrin and Celebrex which were a constant dose required each day. MonaVie reduces inflammation. I had had to buy a larger shoe size to accommodate the swollen foot and now I am back to my old shoe size. Darn, I just bought expensive new shoes two months ago before I realized the change. It helps aging and my skin is smoother and I really do have more energy. This is true Brooke, no exaggerations. It is a wonderful thing.

Personally, I put 2 Tbs of ground flax in my plain, whole-flake oatmeal at breakfast, take 1 Human Micro Flora (HMF) capsule, an iron capsule and 2 tsp of fish oil each twice daily; I also have a cup of warm water with lemon juice each day. My naturopath swears by it and it has honestly made a huge difference in my digestion. I am excited to start MonaVie this week as well!

So there’s my recommendation for the day. What’s yours?
