Picnic & local markets near us

Oh! What a day – Steve took me on a picnic and hike in Spencer Gorge. Gosh it was fun. I didn’t even know Tews Falls existed! We’re going back for sure to continue on the trail. Silly me left the camera in the car but there are some great photos online of the falls as well as the history »

We drove down to Dundas via Sydenham and discovered Dyment’s farm. They had some niagara peaches and local melons, plus lots of baking but I couldn’t tell if all their produce was local because of the bananas. However, their meat and cheese looked great.

We also stopped by Fruit To Go on Parkside drive to get some fresh corn and peaches for a BBQ this weekend with our friends. They have $5/doz and $4.50 for free-stone peaches, young zucchini are 3/$1 and cucumbers are 50c each. The prices aren’t always different than the grocery stores, but if the produce was any fresher, it would still be growing!

Last week I stopped by the Westdale market. They have a few stalls with organic only set up in front of My Dog Joe (corner of Marion Ave & King St W). By chance, there was an extra market that I didn’t know about called the Makers’ Market; it runs on a monthly rotation at St. Paul’s Westdale, Christ’s Church Cathedral and Ferguson Station from May to October. They had a musician, vintage items, handmade goods, art and farm-fresh food. For more details, check out the Makers’ Market Facebook group »

I also found out there is a communal-urban farming expedition to help individuals reap and share their harvest. It’s called the Hamilton Fruit Tree Project » I am really looking forward to participating in the apple and pear harvest this fall and cherries next year! I’m also going to try and hit up my neighbour about her apple tree & raspberries!
