Are you Drinking Enough Water?

7 common signs that you might be thirsty

I’ve read that people need about 2 litres of water a day to stay healthy, but that also assumes the average person is sedentary. I find it’s not enough for me. I feel better after 12-16 ounces (or 3-4 litres).

Water helps with digestion, regulating body temperature, keeping your brain functioning and your muscles moving. No surprise that up to 60% of the human adult body is made up of water.[1]

Thirst is a tricky thing. It takes awareness to recognize when you’re thirsty because it sometimes feels like you’re run down or hungry. Here are 7 signs that you might be thirsty:

  1. Intense salty or sweet cravings
  2. An apple or 8-12 almonds doesn’t fill you up
  3. Difficulty getting to the right word or your tongue feeling thick
  4. Dizziness
  5. Tiredness or sleepiness you can’t shake
  6. Muscle cramps or stomach pains
  7. Headache or migraine

Any food app will track water but even easier is the classic 5-bar tally mark. My mug holds 2 cups so I drink/track 6 of them at work, plus a cup in the morning and a cup with dinner.
