Fresh Food = Incredible Taste
We had the pleasure of picking yellow string beans straight from my friend’s garden. I steamed them for 5 minutes and topped them with butter. Steve was shocked! Literally!
“Why don’t they tell you this is what the vegetable is supposed to taste like?” – so said Steve, after many comments about how freakin’ amazing the beans were.
My sister had a similar experience last week – her husband, who hates vegetables, ate fresh peppers by the forkful with similar commentary. She bought stop-light peppers (red, yellow and green), three for $2 because they were seconds (i.e. not perfectly shaped). It was great!
US corn from the store – we threw it away after one bite. It was more like yellow coloured cattle feed and expensive. $4/doz in the driveway of a farm up the street from my friend’s place – wickedly intense flavour. Boiled for 10 minutes and spun it on cold butter. Even better, soak them in the husk, slip in a touch of butter and roast on the BBQ. WOW!
So why do people still shop at the grocery store when there is fresh vegetables available – who knows? Honestly, I don’t get it. I bought a pressure cooker just so I can store more fresh food for the rest of the year. This weekend – more tomatoes.
