For days when you’re worried, there is something about the smell of fresh bread and filling your stomach to calm your nerves.

I made this for dinner with my parents last weekend. Makes 1 loaf.

  • 3½ cups brown flour
  • ½ cup oats
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbs butter
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1¼ cups buttermilk

This is easy to make:

  1. Mix dry ingredients. Cut in butter. Pour in milk.
  2. Mix with hands into dough (may take a while)
  3. Knead into round load and cut across in the top
  4. Bake 40-50 min. If cooked, it will sound hollow when tapped underneath. Cool and serve warm with butter.

The table – glass dishes and a new cloth
Steve cutting the bread – the ends were a little “tough”
